7A -Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

Gym Time App

Opportunity: I find myself going to the gym and having to wait consistently for a machine to open up and do my workout. I go at various times during the day and I seem to encounter this problem nonetheless.

  • Who: People who go the gym and don't want to expedite their time there
  • What: The machines seem to always seem to be occupied
  • Why: Wrong timing and too many people at the same time
Testing the Who: I believe that I am not the only one experiencing this problem, as when I am on a machine I frequently have people come up to me asking me how many more sets I have left so they can use it next.
Testing the What: This problem seems to occur because there is not enough machines for the amount of people that want to go to the gym.
Testing the Why: I do believe that this problem can be understood by most people whether you go to the gym or not waiting around for something is not something anyone wants to do, even less when you want to work and then head home

Interview 1: I interviewed one of the front desk employees from the gym I go to. She said that she used to work at a smaller no name gym and they didn't experience that problem. She believes that this problem occurs because its too many people and not enough equipment.

Interview 2: I interviewed a friend who goes to the gym for cardio purposes, he said that he doesn't really experience this problem when he goes in because there are like 50 treadmills and cardio equipment. He also added that not a lot of people like going to the gym for cardio.

Interview 3 and 4: I interview a couple who work out together. They shared their understanding and felt like the app was a good idea but it should be something a little different. They have a black card which means they are premium members at the gym so they would like it to be exclusive to premium gym members so they can get in and out quicker. They did also add that it depends on what they are working out and what time of day.

Interview 5: Lastly I interview a friend who doesn't go to the gym too often and when he does go it's usually later in the night. He informed me that around 11 pm there is hardly anyone at the gym and the equipment is basically all his for the taking. So he didn't really seem to interested and understand why he would have to reserve the machine if its wide open for use.

Given your interviews, what do you know about the opportunity that you didn't know before?
I knew that the problem occurred during certain times of the day but I guess I never really thought about how the type of workouts you are doing also play a part in how long you wait. Not all machines are being used at all time as some are more popular than other. I got some positive feedback but I really like the idea that the couple gave me, making it an incentive for the premium members that way they are even more satisfied.

  1. To counter the issue of going to a busy gym and having to wait I choose to attend the gym provided to me by the apartment complex that i reside in. It is never usually busy because of the smaller population who can use the facility and it is open 24/7 so that you can partake at whatever time of the day is most convenient to you. Most apartment complexes have these amenities available to their tenants.

  2. I can definitely see your opportunity and how a gym time app would be a nice service to have when going to work out. Though I do think the opportunity can be somewhat limited as it's only gyms like SW or perhaps other private popular gyms that have that problem. Furthermore it makes good sense to make the app included in premium membership deals.

  3. Jorge,

Although I rarely go to the gym, I have been to the gym before and have had to wait for machines to open which was very annoying. For someone that uses the gym everyday in-between work or classes, I can definitely see the benefit of having an app like this. I also like the exclusive member idea but you have to focus on this app being used in all gyms all over the US. If you limit yourself to the specifications of one specific gym, you run the risk of loosing all those customers from other gyms. With this in mind, try to think about a broad solution that could fit anywhere.
